Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS)
is the most severe form of congenital heart disease (CHD). The first successful intervention for it was undertaken by Norwood in 1983.
So much progress has occurred over the last 35 years, however, there still is no cure. There is so much to learn to help fight the #1 cause of infant mortality.
Mortality associated with the Norwood procedure remains the highest among common congenital heart procedures. An analysis of resource utilization for the 35 most common structural birth defects showed that the Norwood procedure is associated with the highest cost and the third longest length of hospital stay.
This is one of the reasons we feel a responsibility to bring awareness to Critical Congenital Heart Disease (CCHD), HLHS. There are eight CCHDs and they are often fatal, HHLS is one of them. It is a lifetime journey, it takes a family village, a community of volunteers and a team of Cardiologist.
Everyday of life for CCHD child is a victory, everyday is another opportunity for a cure or solution.
A day to bring tribute to the Legacy of Brave little Hearts, Charter Member Michael Winchester. PA HLHS Day is commenced on the 6th day of March, the day Michael passed away from complication of HLHS. This will impact the families of Heart Angels, to the Heart Warriors. The awareness of Public Officials that provide resources and how the CHD community can find hope and refuge in leadership.
